Variations of Brother War Reviewed at PANK
07/5/2012 Variations of a Brother War by J.A. Tyler
reviewed by Ryan Werner
Another great review for J. A. Tyler, from the first paragraph today over at the PANK blog:
“Fairness, love, and war are usually dealt with in that order. This says nothing of the truths found within the inversions, the war in love and the love of fairness and how it’s only a possibility that the fairness in war may be love. There are elements to this equation that have gone missing, and their cumulative void is left to simple, deep wonderment.
What this means is that the chaotic non-constraints of war and love are the only environments in which fairness can exist.
[…]
This stacking of dualities—of trialities, really, with each character being part fairness and part love and part war—allows Tyler to create depth in small pieces. By cutting up the story and characters into three 100-word sections each on multiple topics and then pasting them back together in the vicinity of their congruent parts, a straightforward love triangle set against the backdrop of the American Civil War gains a certain spongy quality that allows it to breathe and contract and, most importantly, to wander.”

A great review for J. A. Tyler, from the first paragraph…
“If I had an ounce of poetic talent, I’d write about J.A. Tyler’s Variations of a Brother War by mimicking its form. I’d create this review out of bundles of stanzas, introducing each bundle with a stark and intriguing theme, and then I’d hypnotize you with unusual comparisons—I might call the book a bird whose word feathers grow long from chains of letters that pocket the air in their hollows and carry the story aloft. Or I’d try to enchant you with circular and layered descriptions—I could tell you that this is a book about war and then tell you that it’s really a book about baking bread; I could write the review in three different voices, some of whom only speak through silence; I could convince you that the story is as old as forever but then prove it’s newness in my next breath.” Read More
Facebook Cover Images Explained
Bringing Art Into the Mix: An Ongoing Curated Exhibition
If you’ve ever been on the Small Doggies Magazine & Press Facebook page, and found yourself wondering — Hey, who did that? Or, Where did that image come from? concerning our choice of Facebook cover images, well look no further. We’ve thought a lot about ways to bring both music and art into the cultural conversation that is the magazine, branching out beyond the literary and small press worlds to talk about more than just words and books. And the Facebook cover images are a part of that mission.
Culled from our past experience of art, as well as current artists and images that have caught our eye, we use the cover section of our Facebook profile page as an exhibition space, offering a new image just about every two weeks. Here, we will keep images documented and collected, along with the names of the artists, the titles of the works, and when possible, links to more information on that artist.
